今日の日本の人口およそ1億2623万人に対し、アイヌ民族の人口はおよそ2万5千人と公表されている。世界中の多くの先住民族と同様に、アイヌ民族もまた、文化変容によって覆われてしまった過去を、再び自分たちの手に取り戻そうと奮闘している。アイヌ民族の文化変容は主に、強引な同化政策を進めた国家権力によって引き起こされたものである。しかし、その文化変容は部分的なものにすぎず、今日アイヌ民族は、日本的なものの只中にありながら、自分たちの特殊性を十分に意識し、独自の文化的混交を力に変えながら、若い世代を中心として、自民族のアイデンティティを再構築する挑戦を行っている。その際、自民族の過去を再領有するためのよすがともなっているのが、伝統的な儀式の記憶である。とりわけ、新しい鮭を迎える儀式アシㇼチェㇷ゚ノミは、アイヌ民族の行う年中行事の一つのハイライトとなっている。 この儀式は、人間と環境との関係が良好に保たれるために、アイヌ民族が長年繰り広げてきた社会文化的でエコロジカルな闘争を、十全に体現しているのである。

■略歴
He is a life-long Alaskan, born in Anchorage. He also studied at the Osaka University of Foreign Studies in Osaka, Japan. Wolf attended the University of Colorado and the American College in Paris, France before receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Antioch College in 1980. Wolf worked in Japan for the State of Alaska from 1991 to 1993. At the State’s trade office in Tokyo.From 1993 to 1998, Wolf was the Vice President and Director of Overseas Projects for the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation.Prior to joining WTCAK, Wolf served as Director of the State of Alaska’s Division of International Trade and Market Development.Wolf is the Executive Director of World Trade Center Alaska, a private, non-profit organization whose mission is to assist Alaskans to compete successfully for trade and investment in the global market place. He has held this position since December 2002.
アンカレッジ生まれ、アラスカ育ち。1980年、アンティオーク カレッジ（オハイオ）卒業。1989-1991年、日本国文部省奨学生。マーケティングと日本でビジネスをするアメリカ企業の管理業務を研究。1991-1993年、アラスカ州貿易事務所において東京勤務を経験、貿易専門官ののち貿易代表に昇任。1993-1998年、アンカレッジ経済開発会社の副社長兼海外プロジェクトディレクター。1998-2002年、アラスカ州 貿易及び国際市場開発部長。2002年12月より現職。
